The culinary style of Bengal is diverse, especially when it comes to their main course. Moreover, they follow a multi-course tradition where the food is eaten in a specific order. The rice (being the staple food) is eaten with a variety of Bhaja (Vegetables fried in mustard oil) at first. Followed by Saag (Spinach fried in mustard oil and black cumin seeds). Then comes the Shukto, a mixture of vegetable prepared in a special spice called Paanch Phoron. Followed by Maach or Mangsho (Fish or Mutton/ Chicken curry). The meal ends with Chutney that is sweet and sour and mainly made of Tomatoes along with Kheer (Rice pudding) or any Bengali sweet.
What I love the most about this cuisine is that it offers a wide variety of options for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. Get over from Kolkata’s street delights and dive into the pool of Bengali main course. Here’s a list of what all you can try at these five amazing restaurants in C.R Park.
Oh Calcutta!
Oh Calcutta is one of the oldest franchise serving lip-smacking Bengali food since 1994. If fine dining is what you cherish, then this is your go-to place.
Oh Calcutta’s must-try dishes
They are famous for their Ilish festival also known as Hilsa Festival that happens every year between September and October. Apart from this, they serve a wide variety of Bengali as well as Bangladeshi delicacies. Potoler dolma is worth a try for vegetarians whereas Ilish Mach and Kosha mangsho is a must-try for the meat lovers.
The restaurant is located in Eros Hotel, Nehru Place that is 5 min away from C.R Park
Aami Bangali
This is a newly opened outlet in C.R Park. They have two branches in India apart from this, one in Kolkata and other in Bengaluru. The food here will make your mind boggle and stomach happy.
Aami Bangali’s best dishes
I have tried almost everything from their menu and loved every bit of it. However, here is a list of my favourites. If unique delicacy is what you crave for then try the Mocha Chigri (flower of Banana with prawn) and Fish Paturi (Fish wrapped in Banana leaf and cooked in steam). If you are a vegetarian, go for Aloo bhaja (Crispy fried potato) with Bhaja moonger dal (Moong dal/ Roasted Lentil soup) along with steamed rice. You will not be disappointed!
The restaurant is located in 40 pocket C.R Park, on the main Kalkaji-C.R.Park road.
Madly Bangalee
As the name says, the food here makes us fall ‘madly’ in love with this cuisine. As you walk by the Kalkaji – C.R.Park main road, you’ll come across this tiny outlet. The graffiti on the walls of this restaurant is the first thing that will grab your attention followed by the blue furniture placed against the white walls.
Madly Bangalee’s must-try dishes
This restaurant serves one of the best Dab Chingri in town and is a must-try for prawn lovers. For vegetarians, Koraishutir Kochuri (Fried flatbread stuffed with peas) is a must-try dish.
This restaurant is located in K-1 C.R Park, on the main Kalkaji-C.R.Park road
Maa Taara
This is one of the oldest restaurants in C.R Park serving authentic Bengali food at an economical price. They make their food taste homely and the preparation is very light.
Maa Taara’s best dishes
Go for their famous Bengali thali that will have all the variety of dishes from Bhaaja to dal to Shukto to Mangsho. All served in one plate!
This restaurant is located at the backside of Market No.2 C.R Park.
Aminia
This is not ideally the best place to have a main course. However, their spicy Kolkata style Biryani and Kosha Mangsho are hard to miss.
This outlet is located in K-1 C.R Park a few houses away from Madly Bangalee, on the main Kalkaji-C.R.Park road. Moreover, this restaurant doesn’t have a seating arrangement and only supports takeaway.
