Orchard street is a retail hub and one of the busiest areas in Singapore. You will find an abundance of upscale boutiques, luxury hotels, malls and cafes here. It is also one of the best locations to stay in because of its good connectivity. Moreover, you get to experience the best of Singapore’s nightlife and dine at some spectacular restaurants.
I stayed at Hotel Supreme located on Kramat Lane. One of the oldest hotels in the country. The hotel was merely 20 minutes away from the airport and two MRT stations at a walkable distance. You can read more about my experience here.
We reached Singapore quite early in terms of their standard check-in time, which is 3 pm. Hence, we had a lot of time to kill before getting to our room. Therefore, we decided to explore Orchard street inside out.
The national dish of Singapore for brunch
It was almost noon, and we were quite hungry as we didn’t get a chance to have breakfast at the airport. Therefore, we decided to have brunch before beginning our quest. We stopped by the Albert Street Hainanese Chicken Rice restaurant next to our hotel. Hainanese Chicken Rice is the national dish of Singapore that consists of steamed rice served with boiled or roasted chicken, broth and salad. I loved the flavours and preparation. The chicken was tender and juicy, which made everything taste even better. However, my mom didn’t like it much because she is not a big fan of meat anyway.
Tip: Not everyone is a big fan of tender chicken. Therefore, I would recommend ordering a single meal to get the taste.
Art trail at Orchard Central Mall
The mall lane at Orchard street is a one-stop shopping destination ranging from luxury to affordable purchasing. But there are plenty of other things happening within these malls. Art Trail at Orchard Central is one such activity that we came across while exploring the malls at Orchard street. Orchard Central is a quirky mall residing in the heart of Orchard street and has the largest permanent public art commission by Far East Organisation. The mall contains seven sculptures made by well-known artists from around the world.
Tip: You can spot one of the sculptures right outside the entrance of the mall. It is a bright red coloured nut-like sculpture that symbolises the prosperity and growth of Singapore. Also, don’t forget to click a picture and tag the artists.
Underground shops at Orchard street
Orchard street is as happening underground as it is above. The ION Mall of Singapore is one of a kind that not only has a plethora of retail stores and eateries underground but also has a beautiful LED-lit walkway connecting the Orchard MRT station. We came across this place while coming from the airport. Therefore, we decided to explore it a bit more post our art trail.
Here is a list of things that you can do at Orchard street besides shopping:
- ION Sky – get a breathtaking panoramic view of Orchard Street from the observation deck at ION Mall. (20 SGD per person. Spend 20$ at any outlet within the mall and show the receipt at the concierge to enter the deck)
- ION Art Gallery – The gallery has a unique display of modern and contemporary art and design for its visitors. The entry is free and worth stopping by on your visit to the mall.
- Fort Canning Park – explore Singapore’s historically most significant landmark, residing in the heart of Orchard street. (40 SGD per person)
- Cathay – watch an art movie or the latest Hollywood flick at Cathay theatre.
