Spending money on travel is one thing we should never compromise. Travelling rejuvenates our mind, body, and soul. It lets us explore new terrains and meet people from different cultures. Hence, travelling at least once a year to somewhere new is essential.

But, saving money for travel can be tricky. Even more, if you have a family to feed. Nevertheless, prior planning can help make things better and more leisurely. I started paying for my trips right after graduation as I started earning. I did not have a high-paying job. But I still managed to travel at least thrice a year by following the four rules that I will share in this post.

Looking for ideas to travel in India this year? Here is a list of 10 Popular & Off-beat Places In India you can consider while picking your destination.

These four rules helped me save money for my travel from the beginning of my journey as a traveler. I hope these help you too in the same way.

Rule 1: Calculate your budget & pick the destination accordingly

As I mentioned earlier, I did not have a high-paying job but still managed to go on three trips a year. I started by calculating the money I could spare from my monthly income for travel. Based on that amount, I picked my destination. I began with the places close to my city (Delhi) and went frugal while picking hotels, restaurants etc. For example, I started saving ₹1,000 a month. After six months, I had ₹6,000 as my travel budget, which I used to go on a two-day trip to Rishikesh.

Rule 2: Find deals online to save money wherever possible

The internet has made it simple to locate great bargains, which can greatly reduce travel expenses. I check websites like Skyscanner for flights and Booking.com for hotels prior to booking. Utilizing apps such as Paytm!, Zomato, Yelp, and Groupon can also reveal superb deals for activities and restaurants. Furthermore, signing up for reward programs can earn you points and save you even more money. These are just a few enjoyable ways to save and discover new experiences and destinations. Also, remember to explore these handy tips for traveling with minimal luggage.

Rule 3: Cut down your expenses for wants & focus only on your needs

All of us are guilty of splurging on our wants. That Nike shoe we saw in a commercial or a Louis Vuitton bag we always wanted. However, the question stands do we need them? We all know the answer. Therefore, controlling the urge to spend money on things we don’t need or shopping for unnecessary things online or offline can help you save a lot. It will allow you to focus on items you actually need, like a good quality camera or quality sportswear for your hikes.

Rule 4: Start a systematic monthly investment plan

A systematic monthly investment will help you keep aside a lump sum amount from your monthly budget in one place. Moreover, it will help you dodge spending the money intended to use for travel on random things. Moreover, depending on the amount you save monthly, you can pick your destination prior. For example, if you save ₹1,000 a month, after six months, you will have ₹6,000 as your travel budget. With this amount, you can travel to Himachal, Uttrakhand, Rajasthan etc. If you save for a year, you’ll be able to travel to Pondicherry, Kerala etc. If you save between ₹25,000 to ₹30,000, you can plan your dream trip to Thailand, Dubai etc.

I hope these tips aid in cutting costs for your travels. If you’re planning a first solo trip or a dream vacation with your parents, these tips will be useful in making the process easier.
