Meenakshi and I love learning about various cultures. One of the best ways of doing that is through food. Therefore, last weekend, we decided to hit up a popular Mexican restaurant in Redmond.
About Taqueria Los Chilangos
The story of Taqueria Los Chilangos is very inspiring and echoes the American Dream. Founded by Mr. Oscar Mendez, who hails from a long line of traditional Mexican cooks and culinary entrepreneurs, this is truly one of the best spots for Mexican food in the Seattle area. Oscar emigrated to the US when he was eighteen and started his journey doing the dishes in some of the top Seattle restaurants. Soon, he worked his way up to ‘lead cook’ while also learning to speak English. But Oscar knew in his heart he wanted to be his own boss and started selling at various Farmer’s Markets in the area. Soon Seattle foodies discovered his passion and exceptional food, and the rest is history. Los Chilangos has gone from a few seasonal food stands to be a big name in the Mexican culinary space today. They also specialize in catering for weddings, corporate events, and other parties. Best of all, their options are very customizable and affordable.
What we ate at Taqueria Los Chilangos
We tried several of their bestseller dishes. Maria, their ace manager, got us started with their house-made Horchatas and super refreshing Pineapple Agua Frescas. The Horchata was smooth, fragrant, and of just the right consistency. We waited for our main course dishes while munching on perfectly crunchy taco chips served probably the best guacamole we have had yet.
Next, we got the Chilaquiles and a traditional Chicken Burrito. Chilaquiles are a breakfast tradition in most Mexican households. They can be prepared in ‘Chupacabra’ style, which represents a combination of Carne Asada and Chorizo, or with any other choice of protein. Our Chilaquiles came with Chorizo, an over-easy fried egg on top, rice, and slow-cooked black beans. Burrito was brimming with fresh spicy flavors, but the real showstopper was the tortilla. It was soft, chewy, and done to perfection!
By now, Meenakshi and I had chosen favorites. I couldn’t get enough of the Chilaquiles, and Meenakshi declared that this was the best Burrito she has eaten in Seattle. We decided to get the Mulitas with chicken and Tacos Al Pastor next. What sets the Mulitas at Los Chilangos apart was the toasted tortillas used at the top and the bottom. They had a bite and crunch to them, yet they were soft and chewy. I wonder how they did that. Between the tortillas were delicious melted cheese, tender chicken, and cilantro. The Taco Plate had three Tacos Al Pastor as well as rice and beans. Al Pastor, as foodies will know, has a history dating back to Lebanese immigrants who brought with them, their favorite lamb shawarma recipes to Mexico. The tacos were overloaded with juicy al pastor meat, complimented perfectly by the fresh zing of pineapple chunks.
Conclusion
Everything we had at Los Chilangos was a testament to Oscar and Naomi, the co-owner’s passion, and the dedication of everyone working at the restaurant. Lu and Manuel, the head chefs, stick to traditional recipes and use the best ingredients to create consistently delicious dishes. The spices, the colors, the flavors, everything was perfectly balanced. After trying several other Mexican restaurants in the Seattle area, I think Meenakshi and I have found a winner.
