Marrakech is one of the most touristy cities in Morocco. Located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, it serves as an ideal halting point for those travelling south. Marrakech is known for its bustling Medina, the famous night market, culture and beautiful gardens.
Not many know, but I am a big adventure enthusiast. I love going on a “trekation”, which basically means spending my vacation on a trek. Although I’ve not been on many treks, I’ve hardly been to two. However, I try not to miss out on any opportunity that comes my way. Therefore, when I got a chance to visit Morocco, I instantly added the Atlas Mountains to my itinerary without any second thoughts.
Essaouira is a charming port city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. A place that I was longing to visit since the day I saw it on Game of Thrones. It was in Season 3 of Game of Thrones when Daenerys travelled to Astapor aka Essaouira and bought the army of Unsullied in exchange for one of her dragons.
Fes is the most underrated city in Morocco when it comes to tourism. Although, you won’t find any breathing space while walking through the lanes of the medina. I still feel that it lacks the popularity it deserves.
After two eventful days exploring Casablanca and Rabat, it was now time to shift my base to the north of the country. Tangier became my home for the next two days. A beautiful city in the north of Morocco, sharing its proximity with Spain through the ‘Strait of Gibraltar’. The locals often joke around saying “Spain is just a 15-minute swim away!” Somehow it seems real as I could see the Spanish land from the rooftop of my hotel.
Located at the mouth of Bou Regreg River and bordering the Atlantic Ocean lies the administrative capital of Morocco, Rabat. A city with quaint cafes, picturesque skyline, walled Medina and many more attractions that keeps you on your toes. Its distance from some of the main cities of Morocco makes it a perfect place for a day excursion.
We’ve all heard about the classic Hollywood movie Casablanca and its famous nightclub, the Ricks’s cafe. That’s what Casablanca was to me before coming to Morocco. Exploring the city on foot made me realise that it is more than just fancy bars and commercial buildings. The French quarters hold up most of Casablanca’s nightlife. However, if you want to experience the real side of the city, here’s what we did that you can do too!
‘Why Morocco?’ was a question that everybody asked me when I told them about my plans for visiting the country. Here in India, not many are familiar with this country. Even I wasn’t sure about it until I met my friend Soukaina from Morocco. We used to work together and bonded well over memes and other things.
